Structure of project contents describes the current or suggested structure that is or will be applied for the content of research projects.

Wiki sites

In 2008, we will fuse small wikis to larger ones to decrease the maintenance and to increase collaboration between projects. Only two main wikis will remain, with two smaller project wikis. This work will be done page by page, and it will probably last for the whole winter and spring. for sensitive material the <accesscontrol> tag will be used to prevent unwanted edits or access to particular pages.

  • Heande wiki Health, the Environment, and Everything for all English content
  • Tyjak wiki Terveys, ympäristö ja kaikki (Health, the Environment, and Everything in Finnish) for all Finnish content
  • Beneris wiki -> relevant parts to be moved to Heande, project pages remain in Beneris wiki until the end of the project.
  • Intarese wiki -> relevant parts to be moved to Heande, project pages remain in Intarese wiki until the end of the project.

The following projects will be moved to another wiki. This means that the relevant and currently important pages will be copied. The old wiki database is left as it is, and it is archived. In other words, not everything is moved, only the content that is still important.

For pages that are not copied to new wikis, a page with the content of the old wiki (a copy of "All pages" page) is created to the new wiki. In this way, the information about the content is always available even if the information itself is archived.

N: server drive

The new basic folder structure for each laboratory or unit starting 1.1.2008 is the following. Additional folders may be created to this level if it is especially important and explicitly motivated. Each main folder should contain a text file called readme_folderguide.txt that describes the content and usage of the folder. Except for projects and users, all folders are further divided by year (four digits as the name of the sub-folder), and all content is stored in the sub-folder of the year when it was created. If the content has to be changed during the following years, the original file is copied to the sub-folder of that year. The copy is then used, and the original file is archived.

  • admin (administrative issues)
  • applications (funding applications; see also projects)
  • hupi (fun, social activities etc.)
  • literature (published literature by others)
  • projects (research projects that get funding; see also applications)
  • presentations (any lectures, meeting abstracts or posters, or other material related to a particular meeting. Note! This applies also to project meetings that have scientific material. The sub-folders are named mmdd_meetingname)
  • publications (publications in which the unit/laboratory are involved. Each manuscript has an own sub-folder starting with the name of the first author)
  • users (a personal folder for users; should only be used for doctoral studies or similar personal content)

N:\huippuyksikko is closed at 31.12.2007 and archived. Files are no longer changed. With active projects, the files that will be changed are copied to new folders, and the old versions are left where they are. The new locations are

  • N:\huippuyksikko\tutkimus -> N:\yep\projects\risk
  • N:\huippuyksikko\presentations -> N:\yep\presentations
  • N:\huippuyksikko\hallinto -> N:\yep\admin\risk
  • N:\huippuyksikko\hupi -> N:\yep\hupi
  • N:\huippuyksikko\jouko -> N:\ytos\users\jouko
  • N:\huippuyksikko\kirjallisuus -> N:\yep\literature (or M-files or Opus?)
  • N:\huippuyksikko\oheishommat -> N:\yep\projects\risk\2008 (or other year)
  • N:\huippuyksikko\projektinhallinta -> Heande wiki
  • N:\huippuyksikko\raportit rahoittajille -> N:\yep\admin\


The following folders should not have been used since 2005, but some content is stored there. They are cleaned up and the content moved to the right place according to the 2007 system. This is done before archiving the N:\huippuyksikko folder.
