Dear all,
I am a senior researcher in Terveyden ja hyvinvoinnin laitos (THL). My job is to assess environmental health risks and develop models and practices for such assessments. I see a great opportunity for collaboration related to models KASVENER, KUHILAS, FRES, and Handprinter.
I have had discussions with Niko and Ville-Veikko and Gregory about developing online emission models about greenhouse gas emissions (Gregory) or fine particles (Niko). We have developed and are actively using an open web workspace Opasnet http://en.opasnet.org for modelling purposes. Niko and Ville-Veikko are considering the possiblity of putting the PM emission model FRES into Opasnet. http://lib.tkk.fi/Diss/2008/isbn9789521131851/ With Gregory, we are thinking about using Opasnet for some modelling functionalities of Handprinter. http://www.handprinter.org/
I am quite sure that both of these activities will progress in one way or another at some point, depending on time and/or resources available. One part of FRES, namely the PILTTI source-receptor matrices, are already functional in Opasnet: http://fi.opasnet.org/fi/Pienhiukkasp%C3%A4%C3%A4st%C3%B6t_Raumalla#Laskenta
Now I am approaching you because the models KUHILAS and KASVENER are such that they would bring additional value and synergism to the family of online models, if they were developed in the same workspace with the same tools. We are using R statistical software for running our online models. It is a common, open source platform among statisticians and researchers.
I know that there are plans about developing KUHILAS and KASVENER into some online environment, and that there is a need to merge those two models. I am not sure what is the current status of these plans and implementations. However, I would like to start a discussion on developing a collaborative project to work together and gain synergism from the different expertise we jointly have.
I am happy to give more details about the possibilities and the current functionalities in Opasnet.
What do you think?
Sincerely,
Jouni
