HIAir - ENHIS assessment tool
HIAir is a tool developed for the Health Impact Assessment (HIA) of Urban Air Pollution (UAP). It is one of the outputs of the European Environment and Health Information System (ENHIS) project. It is available at www.hiair.eu, although you will have to register in order to gain access to the site (registration is free and straightforward).
What is HIAir?
"HIAir is a routine tool, developed by ENHIS, for assessing the health impact of urban air pollution. This tool can be used to estimate the number of health events that could potentially be prevented, or the gain in life expectancy, when reducing the exposure to air pollution for a specific population. It can also be used to evaluate different policy scenarios for reducing air-pollution levels, and to assess new strategies. Estimates are based on ENHIS data available from international databases such as EUROSTAT and AIRBASE."[1]
Example use of the HIAir tool
The tool can be used to calculate either the short-term or long-term cases of disease attributable to Urban Air Pollution (UAP) for a given city. It is also possible to compare the numbers of attributable cases between different cities.
