Does the option increase or decrease vehicle emissions?[1]
Definition
Even though technical innovations in general do decrease automobiles´ mean emissions, it would be even better if environmentally friendly transport modes (such as marine or rail transport) got a lot more into use; thereby the environment could get significantly disburdened. But an attitude change in Europe´s inhabitants, as well as a change of customs in daily life, such as e.g. less single-person-vehicle-use, sensible drivig manners and some simple environmentally friendly vehicle operation rules such as e.g. decreasing vehicle emissions by keeping the vehicle tires properly inflated could definitely have a positive impact on the state of the environment.
The EU Commission works on the reduction of vehicle emissions through proposing their Euro standards aiming at reducing the emissions of new passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. The latest proposal (Dec. 2005) commonly referred to as the 'Euro 5' standards, aims at a significant contribution to a further improvement of air quality in Europe. Particulate emissions from diesel cars would be slashed by 80% and nitrogen oxides (NOx) by 20%. The tougher standards proposed would lead to the introduction of particulate filters for diesel cars. For petrol cars, the Commission proposes to cut NOx emissions and hydrocarbons by 25%.[1]
