Scope

Does the option affect equal treatment and equal opportunities for all?[1]

Definition

Equality is at the heart of a healthy society and economy. Equal opportunity is a principle of social justice and a key to achieving greater competitiveness and economic growth. Areas such as employment practice, equal pay, retirement and pensions, rights for pregnant women and part-time workers, education and training are very important. The fight against discrimination in society will not be won through implementing legislation alone. Past experience has shown that legislation needs to be underpinned by concrete actions. That is why the Council of the European Union launched a Community Action Programme that could assist in ensuring EC anti-discrimination policies would become a reality. The present Community Action Programme runs from 2001 until 2006 and is managed by the Directorate-General for Employment and Social Affairs' Anti-Discrimination Unit. Placing particular emphasis on the involvement of discriminated groups in its implementation, the Programme is designed to support activities combating discrimination on grounds of racial or ethnic origin, religion or belief, disability, age or sexual orientation.[1]
