Distres is a coordination action which is funded by the European Commission under the International Cooperation (INCO) of the 6th Framework Program for Research and Development (FP6).

Objectives of the project

Recent concerns on environmental protection and sustainable development resulted in the critical need for a cleaner energy technology.

Some potential solutions have evolved including energy conservation through improved energy efficiency, a reduction in the use of fossil fuels and an increase in the utilisation of environmentally friendly energy forms.

This is leading to the use of renewable energy sources (RES) and an alternative to large scale source of energy production known as distributed generation (DG) technologies.

In the past few years, DG technologies have made a growing number of exciting claims that small generators will revolutionize the electricity generation sector and will have an enormous environmental payoff.

A future is envisioned in which DG technologies are as ubiquitous as boilers. Homeowners and businesses would buy these small generators and have them installed just as any other appliance. In these visions, DG technologies become so common that they enhance electric reliability to near perfection.
