Scope

Intake of PCB from fish in Beneris describes the exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) due to fish consumption in the Beneris population.

Definition

Intake of PCB from fish in Beneris is represented as a continuous variable and is indexed by variable age. It applies to the whole Beneris population (all age groups 0-2yr, 2-18yr, 18-55yr and 55yr+) and to indicators such as remaining lifetime risk of cancer in adults and risk of developmental dental defects.

Causality

List of parents:

Data

To evaluate lifetime cancer risk the lifetime average daily dose (LADD) is used. Intake of PCBs from fish by adults is calculated as a product of average daily dose (ADD) and the ratio of exposure duration and averaging time (= life expectancy at birth), where ADD is the product of average total PCB concentration in fish and daily intake of fish divided by the body weight.

It is assumed that the exposure duration for people from a given age group is the number of years this age group covers. In other words it is assumed that people from a given age group are exposed to PCBs from the time of entry to this age group until the time of exit from this age group. Thus, the exposure duration is 37 years for age group 18-55yr and 45 years for age group 55yr+ (assuming max age of 100 years).

Based on WHO statistics [1] the life expectancy at birth in 2006 was 83 and 76 years for Finnish women and men, respectively, and the combined life expectancy was 79 years.

To estimate non-cancer risks the ADD of PCBs is used. For children, the ADD of PCBs from fish is calculated as a product of daily fish consumption and the average WHO-TEQ concentration of PCBs in fish divided by the body weight.

Formula

General formulas (excluding unit conversions):
ADD_species(i)=Average_WHO-TEQ_PCB_concentration_species(i)*Daily_consumption_species(i)/BW
LADD_species(i)=Average_Total_PCB_concentration_species(i)*Daily_consumption_species(i)*Exposure_duration/(BW*Life_expectancy_at_birth)

Unit

ADD: pg WHO-TEQ/kg bw-day
LADD: mg/kg bw-day
