Pollutants in the Urban Environment (PUrE) is a four-year research consortium project (2005 to 2009) funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The main aim is to develop a new decision-support framework to assist decision-makers in identifying more sustainable solutions to the problem of urban pollution.

The main products of the project are:

  • a decision-support framework;
  • a modelling (software) platform incorporating a suite of scientific and engineering models and tools; and
  • related guidance documents.

The PUrE approach is a decision-support framework. It provides a useful suite of models and tools, linked to a variety of GIS enabled datasets, to help end-users to conduct assessments, ranging from simple screening studies, to detailed modelling of different urban scenarios and prediction of possible impacts of urban pollution.

The integrated assessment framework will be developed to fulfil three critical tasks:

  • mapping the flow of pollutants associated with human activities;
  • modelling the fate and transport of chemicals in the environment; and
  • understanding the impacts of urban pollutants on human and ecological health.

The framework guidance is being tailored for use by four key stakeholder groups:

  1. regulators, policy-makers, and local authorities;
  2. industry and commercial research organisations;
  3. researchers and students; and
  4. NGOs and associations.

The project is led by The University of Manchester and carried out in collaboration with Cardiff University, Forest Research, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Sheffield University, University of Exeter and the University of Surrey.
