Explanations for the category problem

There is a recursion problem in the category structure in Opasnet. This means that there are categories that are (possibly indirectly) categorised to themselves, thus producing an infinite loop of categories. As a result, the category page cannot be parsed, and an empty page shows. However, such category pages can be normally edited by adding ?action=edit to the end of the URL.

The question is: where are the recursive categories that cause this problem? The Main category is jammed, and so are most/all its subcategories. However, the problem is probably somewhere in their subcategories causing all those categories to fail to which they belong. I have now edited dozens of category pages and successfully removed blocks from some pages by removing blocked subcategories. But it makes no sense to uncategorise all categories. Instead, someone should to this:

  • Start from a blocked category (e.g. Main category).
  • Seach all pages with keyword Category:Main category. Make sure that also category and template pages are searched.
  • Try to open all pages that have the category link. If blocked, search all subcategories of the blocked category.
  • Remember that categorisation may come from a template, so that the categorised pages do not have the text but the template does.
  • Write down the hierarchical list of categories on this page and mark which categories are blocked and which are not.
  • Try to figure out where the problem is.
