Scope
What are possible mitigation strategies that are not directly related to reducing carbon dioxide emissions?
Definition
Data
All of the mitigation policies described below are only partial solutions. There are many technological, economical, and even ethical problems. They have many known but also ignored risks.[1]
Result
Policies that reduce carbon dioxide in atmosphere
These policies remove carbon dioxide and store it in a biological or geological storage.
- ←--1: . Alleviates also other problems due to high carbon dioxide, such as acidification of sea water. H. Korhonen, interpreted by --Jouni 01:44, 19 July 2009 (EEST) (type: truth; paradigms: science: defence)
- ←--2: . Benefits occur globally. H. Korhonen, interpreted by --Jouni 01:44, 19 July 2009 (EEST) (type: truth; paradigms: science: defence)
Reforestration of the World's previous forest areas[1]
- ⇤--3: . Limited efficacy, could maximally only remove one third of the current carbon dioxide increase. H. Korhonen, interpreted by --Jouni 01:44, 19 July 2009 (EEST) (type: truth; paradigms: science: attack)
Fertilising poor sea areas, which increases photosynthesis and carbon intake[1]
Large-scale biofuel use with carbon capture and storage[1]
- ⇤--4: . The re-entry of stored carbon dioxide to atmosphere would cause a climate change burst. H. Korhonen, interpreted by --Jouni 01:44, 19 July 2009 (EEST) (type: truth; paradigms: science: attack)
- ←--5: . This method could in theory slow down the carbon dioxide increase remarkably. H. Korhonen, interpreted by --Jouni 01:44, 19 July 2009 (EEST) (type: truth; paradigms: science: defence)
Policies that reduce the radiative forcing by increasing radiation from the Earth to space
Launching lenses to the space to reduce radiation to the Earth.[1]
Sea salt spraying to lower clouds above sea (albedo increase)[1]
- ----7: . Only local impact on climate. H. Korhonen, interpreted by --Jouni 01:44, 19 July 2009 (EEST) (type: truth; paradigms: science: comment)
Turning large desert areas white with e.g. plastic (albedo increase)[1]
- ----8: . Only local impact on climate. H. Korhonen, interpreted by --Jouni 01:44, 19 July 2009 (EEST) (type: truth; paradigms: science: comment)
Spraying sulphur compounds to stratosphere (decrease in radiative forcing)[1]
- ----9: . Mimics large eruptions of volcanoes. H. Korhonen, interpreted by --Jouni 01:44, 19 July 2009 (EEST) (type: truth; paradigms: science: comment)
- ←--10: . Could even compensate for the increased carbon dioxide. H. Korhonen, interpreted by --Jouni 01:44, 19 July 2009 (EEST) (type: truth; paradigms: science: defence)
- ⇤--11: . Rapid climate change would occur, if the sulphur emissions stopped due to unexpected problems or a global crisis. H. Korhonen, interpreted by --Jouni 01:44, 19 July 2009 (EEST) (type: truth; paradigms: science: attack)
- ⇤--12: . Sulphur cloud should be artificially maintained for hundreds of years. H. Korhonen, interpreted by --Jouni 01:44, 19 July 2009 (EEST) (type: truth; paradigms: science: attack)
- ⇤--13: . Probably would somewhat destroy the ozone layer. H. Korhonen, interpreted by --Jouni 01:44, 19 July 2009 (EEST) (type: truth; paradigms: science: attack)
- ⇤--14: . Might cause unexpected changes in global climate. H. Korhonen, interpreted by --Jouni 01:44, 19 July 2009 (EEST) (type: truth; paradigms: science: attack)
