dioxin, chemical name with multiple uses. In less careful language dioxin is used as a synonym of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), or any of the polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD) or dibenzofurans (PCDF), or the whole class of these compounds (see the specific entries). In strict chemical sense dioxin is a heterocyclic ring-structured chemical containing carbon, oxygen and hydrogen, C4H4O2, forming e.g. the middle ring of dibenzo-p-dioxin (see chemical structures).
