Discussion with Rainer, Jouni, and Alex 6.7.2010

  • Deadline for this part of MCS analysis: early September.
  • Deadline for the MCS report: end of September

Three main topics for THL to assess in the [Mega case study]]:

  1. concentration change of outdoor-to-indoor pollutants due to insulation
    • Stuttgart has basic data on buildings, both Northern and Southern Europe. They will send information about them.
    • Estimates will be made by THL about how fast the better insulation in buildings will change (rought estimate 1-2%/a of house stock gets improved)
      • Based on this, changes in ventilation will be estimated. Easiest is to calculate old and new/renovated buildings separately with high/low ventilation? Another aspect is incoming air filtration, which reduces some pollutants. How many houses are better insulated?
    • Matti has building and heating information from several countries. In addition, Otto has done work on Finnish ventilation and insulation issues. Jouni will talk with both of them.
    • Jouni will check Ullas work on radon mould.
    • Make sure that all relevant pollutants are included: formaldehyde, environmental tobacco smoke, radon, PM, others?. Do we have background concentrations? Jouni will talk with Matti.
    • Who calculates the whole chain? THL based on Hilary's and Fintan's ERFs.
    • The official MCS scenarios have insulation, Marcus from Ustutt (energy modeller) has some insulaton data. Jouni will ask for that.
  2. Due to bioenergy emphasis, there will be more wood burning ->more pm?
    • More wood burning as a source to indoor air directly
    • Cenral stoves are not bad in this but open stoves in the room are. They may have high emissions to indoor air. Jouni will ask Marko, as he has made some estimates already.
    • Look also at the outdoor emissions.
    • Question: where do we get data for Central and South Europe? Jouni will talk with Marko.
    • 10 % (of what) in stuttgart comes from wood burning.
  3. Urban heat islands
    • Jouni will get data from Sandra. Data already exists for also other than year 2005. Data is in EMEP grid (and is hourly?)
      • Ustutt will come back to this within a day and tell what can be provided.
