Virpi Leivo opened the event and Ulla Haverinen-Shaughnessy introduced the project background and objectives. First Eduardo de Oliveira Fernandes (University of Porto, Portugal) told about “Advanced Studies on Energy in the Built Environment”. The second speaker was Mickael Derbez from CSTB, France. He’s presentation was about French IAQ observatory and research on IAQ and comfort in energy-efficient buildings. Then Tiina Reponen (University of Cincinnati Education and Research Center, USA) presented some results from their study “Effects of Green Renovation on Indoor Air Quality”. The next speaker was Matthias Braubach from WHO (Bonn office, Germany), he told about potential health benefits related to improving energy efficiency and IEQ in buildings. The fifth speaker was Pertti Metiäinen (National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health VALVIRA, Finland) whose topic was “Application of the national instructions regarding physical, chemical and biological factors in housing and other living premises”. Then Harri Hahkala from Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences (Finland) was telling about the Finnish classification for IEQ and its application in assessment of IEQ in renovated buildings. The last speaker was Pawel Wargocki (President ISIAQ, Chair ASHRAE EHC International Centre for Indoor Environment and Energy, DTU Civil Engineering, Denmark), he’s topic was “Collecting and disseminating scientific information regarding energy efficiency, IEQ, and health”.

June 6th 2013 in Kaunas, Lithuania

An open seminar was arranged on June 6th in Kaunas, Lithuania. The target audience was scientists, decision makers, housing administrators and building professionals. All together 63 people participated. The seminar included nine presentations, which were mainly focused on sustainable building renovation. The first presenter was Simona Irzikeviciute from Housing and Urban Development Agency (HUDA, Lithuania), she gave an overview of the Lithuanian building renovation strategy. The third presentation was focused on the effects of building renovation to building structures, it was presented by Virpi Leivo from Tampere University of Technology (TUT, Finland). The fourth presenter was Lina Šeduikyte from Kaunas University of Technology (KTU, Lithuania) and she told us about the issues of air quality and microclimate management in energy efficient buildings. After a short coffee break Dene Carvell from East Midlands Housing Association (EMHA, UK) gave the fifth presentation about UK’s Green Deal initiative. He was followed by a colleague Tarif Javid (EMHA, UK), who told us about the challenges in applying practical retrofit solutions to a Victorian mid-terraced property. The sixth presentation was focused on solutions for renovation - how to achieve good indoor climate and energy efficiency in old apartment building (Estonian experience) given by Anti Hamburg from Tallinn University of Technology (TTU, Estonia). After this Gatis Žogla from Riga Technical University (RTU, Latvia) kept a presentation "Sustainable materials for building renovation and renovation practices in Latvia". The last presentation "Smart cities: Kaunas case" was given by Ramūnas Gatautis from Lithuanian Energy Institute (LEI, Lithuania).
After the seminar there was an expert discussion for invited guests: Building renovation is mostly based on economic aspects – performing cost-effective refurbishment actions assuming further savings in energy costs. Can we also assure comfortable and healthy living to the inhabitants with no negative impact to the environment? What are the key sustainability aspects to consider in the process?
