Scope

Does the option impact on consumers' ability to benefit from the internal market?[1]

Definition

The single market allows undertakings to compete on equal terms on the markets of all member states. This entails benefits to consumers on multiple grounds: on the one hand the common competition policy prevents consumers from bearing the cost of protecting non-profitable businesses through keeping prices artificially high in certain sectors; on the other hand the large single market enables undertakings, through economise of scale, to optimise their productive, administrative and marketing operations and accordingly to reduce costs. Under conditions of fair market competition, such cost reductions result in benefits accruing to consumers in terms of larger offer of products matching consumers' needs at lower prices.[1]
